Update on EIA & Template Letter |
|
George Eustice MP for Camborne & Redruth visited the Disability Cornwall offices today.
We had a very productive meeting with him and he heard first-hand about the need for the Government to complete an Equality Impact Assessment (EIA) on the cumulative affect of all their proposed benefit cuts. This assessment would demonstrate how many disabled people can be affected by a myriad of different cuts to their entitlements and the impact on their independence and quality of life this could have.
We will continue this dialogue with him and our other MPs, but are acutely aware they can only act if their constituents demand it. Please help us by contacting your MP with your concerns. The information on this template letter may help you.

Disability Cornwall has been lobbying all of our local MPs (including 2 in Devon) to push the Government to conduct an Equality Impact Assessment (EIA) on the cumulative affect of all the proposed benefit cuts.
We have now had meetings with two local MPs and another, with George Eustice MP, will occur tomorrow. We will use this opportunity to press him for the EIA and to also illustrate the devastating affects the cuts are, and will have, on disabled people and their families.
Please help us by contacting your local MP and encourage them yourself to lobby their own political disability group to call on the Government to carry out this much needed EIA on the cumulative affect of the all the benefit changes. They can only act if their constituents demand it! Together our voice will be stronger.

Disabled People Against Cuts are currently fighting the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) through the courts to save the Independent Living Fund (ILF). The ILF has provided vital assistance to people with high support needs in helping to maintain independence and the development of fulfilling lifestyles.
The current fund is centrally administered, but will be passed to local authorities in 2015 where it will not be ring fenced. Considering the funding crisis many council’s are in, ILF users fear the money will disappear. Although Disability Cornwall were originally asked to act as contact point, we now want as many ILF users as possible to get in touch, even if only to be kept informed about their on-going campaign. There is strength in numbers. Please contact them.

New documents have come to light which confirm what many disabled people have always known – there are no welfare reforms, just benefit cuts, such as the recent changes to council tax, a tax people receiving council tax benefit were deemed too poor to pay, but will now have to find 25% of their individual charge. There are more significant changes happening to people’s entitlements from next month and as always, if you are concerned how they may affect you, please contact our Disability Information & Advice Line (DIAL) between 10am-3pm Monday to Friday.

Our mission is to facilitate a fully inclusive society in Cornwall through empowering disabled people to achieve independence, choice and control. These last three words seem under great threat for disabled people in 2013 from a Government that completely fails to understand what cumulative affect of all their benefit cuts will have on disabled people. This point is acknowledged by the Department for Work and Pensions. We implore the Government to conduct an Equality Impact Assessment, but this will never occur unless you lobby your local MP.
Two of our MPs have told us they have heard more about the badger cull from their constituents than they have about the plethora of benefit cuts many disabled people are facing, so please contact your MP with the concerns you have.

Healthwatch-Communities Involved |
|
Community Service Volunteers (CSV) is part of an initiative called Healthwatch-Communities Involved.
They are supporting NHS Change Day by calling on local people,
communities and voluntary organisations to make a difference by getting
involved and adding their voice to how local health and social care
services are run in their areas.
Local health and social care is changing rapidly and the ways in which
people can participate in shaping these services is also changing. From
1 April 2013, a new local consumer champion - local Healthwatch - with the
powers to hold local services to account will be set up in every city
and county council across the country.
To get the best local services people need a say. They need to be able to
influence what services are available, how they are delivered and who
delivers them. They also need to challenge services that aren't up to
scratch. There is so much potential to make a difference, your
involvement does not have to be huge. Anyone can get involved in local
Healthwatch.
Please click on the link below instead of the main one which is
underneath my name, as this will mean I can count you as a CSV
Volunteer. Sign Up: http://healthwatch-ci.co.uk/signup-csv/
