Welcome to our new website, which we hope you will find useful, enjoyable and easy to navigate.
We are a user-led and membership organisation for people of all ages living with a long term health condition or disability, their carers and families in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
We have nearly 20 years' experience of helping to create a more inclusive society using our RISE approach:
Represent Include Support Empower
We deliver a range of frontline support services for young people or adults living
with a long term health condition or disability,
their families and carers. We also support community organisations and businesses to develop more inclusive approaches to meeting the needs of their clients and customers.
Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly has a higher than average proportion of people whose day-to-day lives are limited by a long term health condition or disability, equating to 114,023 or 21.33% of the population, much higher than the UK average. In addition, Cornwall remains one of the poorest areas in the whole of Europe, with average incomes well below the rest of the UK.
Despite decades of disability rights legislation, significant barriers to full independence, choice and control still exist for disabled people and, by default, their families and carers. Inaccessible services, premises and workplaces, a poor public transport infrastructure and negative perceptions of disabled people are still a sad reality.
However, while we clearly still have a long way to go before disabled people can enjoy the same rights and opportunities as everyone else, we believe that working positively and proactively with our membership and service providers will increase the economic and social well-being of all citizens in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
